Skin phototypes and sun protection

Small amounts of ultraviolet radiation are necessary for the production of vitamin D. On the other hand, overexposure can have acute and chronic effects on the skin, eyes and immune system.

Each skin type reacts differently to sunlight, depending on its natural characteristics, and especially its phototype. Phototypes depend on the colour of the skin (from the lightest to the darkest), of the hair, the presence of frecklesphotosensitivity and quality of tanning.

Regardless of phototype, the sun worsens the dryness and oiliness of the skin, causes photoaging, i.e. skin lesions such as wrinkles, spots and discolorations, as well as sunburn.

Applying some simple rules for protection can help us to enjoy the sunshine safely.

  • Limit your sun exposure, especially between 11.00 – 17.00.
  • Sit in the shade when the sunlight is intense. Even when se sit under a tree or umbrella, we are not fully protected from the sun.
  • Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a protection index of at least SPF30 and repeat application every two hours or earlier if you have gone swimming or are playing sports on the beach.
  • You should apply sunscreen at least 20 minutes before sun exposure. Pay close attention to sensitive areas, such as your ears, nose, lips, palms, feet, and head for men who do not have hair.
  • A brimmed hat offers adequate protection for the eyes, ears, face and back of the neck.
  • A cotton or lycra t-shirt, especially for children, is necessary during your time spent on the beach.
  • Protect your eyes with sunglasses that have filters for UVΑ and UVΒ radiation. Sunglasses that offer 99-100% protection from UVA and UVB rays significantly reduce the risk of damage to the eyes. Wearing sunglasses is especially important for children, as sun radiation penetrates more easily into their eyes than in adults.
  • Avoid fake tanning, as it is not healthy, does not protect you from sun exposure, and is not safer than tanning naturally.
