Low GI diet or ketogenic diet for weight loss?

Low carbohydrate diets have been shown to be effective in weight loss and/or in the treatment of metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes. Their long-term effects have been evaluated by controlled clinical trials with two years of follow-up, with studies covering over two decades. Experts from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) have taken into account the glycemic index when drafting recommendations related to the choice of food items.

Low glycemic load / glycemic index diets have been proven to help with weight loss (and in particular their effect on fat mass) as well as obesity.

The division of carbohydrates into "fast" and "slow" was first introduced to characterize the different effect that carbohydrates have on blood glucose levels. Small molecules, which were thought to be easily digested, were classified as "fast" carbohydrates, while larger molecules (mainly starches) were thought to be slower to digest.

Mediterranean and low-carbohydrate diets have proven to be very effective alternatives compared to low-fat diets. Low carbohydrate diets are lauded for their effect on fat and Mediterranean diets for their glycemic control. So one can combine these two very well studied protocols and with some modifications create a '' shield '' against heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and some forms of cancer.

In this context, SYMMETRIA has created the Pro-GI-Diet diet protocol based on the Mediterranean diet. The Pro-G-Diet is a combination of a low glycemic index diet and adequate protein intake, while providing each person with the necessary nutrients for the proper functioning of their metabolism.

Where necessary and feasible, a ketogenic diet protocol may be applied, which seems just as effective as eating a low glycemic load diet. The ketogenic diet can be applied for a limited period of time to achieve immediate results in weight loss and ideally to succeed in a low glycemic load diet, which will help maintain the weight loss over time.

It is worth noting that the ketogenic diet is a very low in carbohydrates, and high in fats and proteins. Its great advantage is that it significantly reduces the feeling of hunger. It includes both animal sources of protein such as meat, poultry, eggs and fish, as well as plant based sources such as nuts, edamame and tofu. Nuts are also a good source of fats as well as protein, which is why they are so important in a ketogenic diet. At the same time, the ketogenic diet contains plenty of vegetables, avocados, olive oil, coconut butter and cow's milk butter.

As not all diet protocols suit all people, SYMMETRIA's nutritionist team will guide you through a specialized plan according to your individual needs.
