Why electrolytes are important to the body

Electrolytes are metals that have an electric charge and are very important for our health and survival, as they keep the body hydrated and help it to produce energy. They are also responsible for normal cell function, stimulation of muscle contractions including those that make our heart beat, and regulation of fluid balance in our body.

Electrolytes include sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, chlorine and bicarbonates.

An electrolyte imbalance leads to symptoms such as muscle cramps, spasms, muscle weakness, fast or irregular heartbeat, headache, intense thirst, numbness, tiredness or lethargy, confusion and disorientation, changes in blood pressure, and seizures.

Consumption of fruit and vegetables is especially important, and it is recommended to eat 5 servings per day. Foods that offer adequate electrolyte intake include: spinach, greens, avocado, broccoli, strawberries, watermelon, oranges, bananas, potatoes, beans, soybeans, tofu, tomatoes, milk, yogurt, fish, almonds, pistachios.

If you sweat a lot, exercise in high temperature environments or do intense exercise for over 1 or 2 hours, you may benefit from consuming a sports drink before, during, and after your workout.
