How obesity can be a risk factor in relation to Covid-19

Obesity seems to increase the mortality rate of Covid-19, according to a recent study carried out by Greek researchers that was published in the scientific journal Molecular Medicine Reports.

According to the specific study by Dr. Petrakis from the School of Medicine of the University of Crete and his team, obesity is one of the most critical risk factors in complications arising from the disease.

The chronic inflammation that accompanies obesity seems to contribute to compromising the function of the immune system. In fact, if type II diabetes and metabolic syndrome coexist, the mortality rate of Covid-19 is ten-fold.

The vulnerability of the immune system related to increased body weight has a direct relationship with our dietary habits.

During these times, avoid eating high-calorie foods that do not offer sufficient quantities of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, that is, nutrients that are essential for a healthy immune system.

This category includes mainly processed foods, such as baked goods, cakes, biscuits, packaged juices and fast food.

According to the researchers, even genetically modified foods - like corn, rapeseed oil, corn oil, potatoes, tomatoes, cabbage and other fruits and vegetables - can also lead to compromising the immune system's function.
