Thread veins or spider veins are thin blood vessels that are running close to the surface of the skin, making red or purple lines. Thread veins are not broken but rather just slightly dilated. Thread veins normally develop as a person ages. Sclerotherapy is considered particularly effective in treating spider veins. This is an injectable treatment where a hardening solution (polidocanol) is injected into the internal walls of the spider veins. This causes hardening (thrombosis) in the capillaries and prevents the flow of blood. The treated blood vessels gradually fade, as they are absorbed into local tissue and eventually disappear. Complete healing time ranges from 3-6 weeks.
